Who Reads Books?

Any avid reader can tell you that books help to develop your thoughts, teach new lessons and provide you with novel and interesting knowledge, all the while keeping your mind active and engaged. Some read for self-improvement, others to become more open-minded and some, just to relax and unwind. Books fulfil a plethora of purposes and all readers enjoy them in their own unique way.

There is a Book for Everyone

Regardless of your age, occupation or interests, there’s always book out there waiting to be read. While factors such as education, gender and geographical location can provide an indication of how someone might enjoy books, these characteristics should never limit anyone in their reading behaviour. Many read to gain knowledge and many others enjoy the escape from reality and immersing themselves in a story. And of course, there’s plenty of overlap between these groups. As Mark Zuckerberg notes, books offer an escape to an extent that most other media formats cannot achieve.

‘Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today. I’m looking forward to shifting more of my media diet towards reading books.’
Mark Zuckerberg

Should Everybody Read?

For most people, whether they realise it or not, books are an essential component of their lifestyle. Whether that’s for education, work or entertainment, books allow people to react, transform and simplify their lives like no other kinds of media. While there are countless books currently available and millions more published each year, new technology is detracting people from picking up books. While digital devices seem to be simplifying the processes of learning and entertainment, books have an unparalleled capacity to develop character and supplement the ability to think at one’s own pace. Preference for books over digital devices is evident for many, including celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey. Despite a net worth of almost $3 billion, books are still a staple in her lifestyle.

‘Reading is a way for me to expand my mind, open my eyes and fill up my heart’
Oprah Winfrey
